Redesigning the traditional rotary evaporator: Case Study

Aditya Scientific's initiative to redesign its Rotary Evaporator underscores a commitment to innovation and user-centric design. By highlighting functionality and elevating the user experience, the aim is to optimize laboratory processes and enhance efficiency.

The redesign involves adding advanced features such as intuitive controls, automated functions, and improved safety measures to streamline operations and minimize errors.

Additionally, enhancements in ergonomics and user interface design can contribute to a more intuitive and pleasant experience for laboratory technicians, ultimately boosting productivity and satisfaction. Through this redesign effort, Aditya Scientific seeks to set new standards in the laboratory equipment industry.  We helped them empower researchers and scientists with the redesigned rotary evaporator.

Working with a visionary like Mr. Naresh was a pleasure for us at Analogy Design. Every step of the way his clarity of thought was refreshing and it really helped us create a differentiated international product language that can exceed other competitors in the world. We were able to get the best output for this project since we had a clear vision and relevant feedback. We also had samples to touch and feel that helped us speed up the work.

Determining the rotary evaporator design language was our biggest obstacle. In 2019, we reached out to Analogy Design to collaborate on enhancing and perfecting our product in order to launch it on a global scale. The team was knowledgeable and helped us choose and fabricate the materials. They enhanced not just the product's appearance but also its entire use experience and interaction. Working with them was a pleasure, and I'm excited to collaborate with them on many more projects in the future.

The challenge

Why it’s so difficult

01

Develop design elements to address the issue of eye catching parts in the Rotary Evaporator. We were aiming to simplify assembly, enhance functionality, and optimise user experience in laboratory settings.

01

The presence of disparate parts in the Rotary Evaporator complicates assembly procedures and may lead to inefficiencies and errors in operation, hindering productivity and user satisfaction.

02

Develop a solution to optimise space arrangement in the Rotary Evaporator, aiming to maximise efficiency, improve workflow, and enhance usability for the target audience. The space in the Rotary Evaporator leads to cluttered workspaces. This also hinders access to components, and compromised user experience, impacting overall productivity and efficiency in laboratory operations.

02

Inefficient space utilization in the Rotary Evaporator leads to cluttered workspaces, hindered accessibility to components, and compromised user experience, impacting overall productivity and efficiency in laboratory operations.

03

Modernize the controls of the Rotary Evaporator to improve functionality, usability, and efficiency in laboratory operations, addressing the issue of outdated controls.

03

The existing controls of the Rotary Evaporator are outdated, leading to inefficiencies, difficulties in operation, and limitations in functionality, hindering productivity and user satisfaction.

The initiative aims to revamp the Rotary Evaporator by addressing three critical pain points -Inefficient space utility, Outdated controlsUnassembled parts. First, we achieved to optimise space utilisation through a compact design and modular configuration. Next, we solved the issue of cluttered workspaces by enhancing workflow efficiency.

Second, through user research, the modernization of controls helped replacing outdated manual controls with a digital interface, touchscreen technology, and wireless connectivity, leading to improved usability, advanced functionality, and remote monitoring capabilities.

Lastly, the integration of a modular design methodology and standardised interfaces tackles the issue of disparate parts, simplifying assembly processes and reducing the risk of errors. This helped create a premium product that can be sold globally. With a high visual appeal and high quality design ideas, we were able to implement a good product design philosophy.

Through these comprehensive enhancements, the Rotary Evaporator becomes more user-friendly, efficient, and adaptable, meeting the evolving needs of laboratory settings while maximizing productivity and user satisfaction. This is the role of Industrial design and packaging solutions with the final design and final product matching the standards of a design project.
